Twitter is a social networking site that asks users one simple question- WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Users must answer that question in 140 characters or less. Users "Tweet" on the web, texting using a cell phone, or by instant message. Users choose to post to Twitter, giving information about what you are doing at that specific moment. Users respond to others posts with short messages known as "Tweets." Use these conversation starters to help your child make good choices when using Twitter:
1. By default, when you sign up for Twitter, your profile is public but you can control this feature by selecting "Protect my Updates" in the settings area.
2. Never give out personal information on Twitter or any type of social networking site. Be sure not to let people know you are home alone.
3. Always tell a parent about any negative or threatening tweets you may receive.
4. Talk to your parents before you arrange to meet anyone you don't know in real life using Twitter.
5. Consider every tweet. Imagine your parents could read it!
6. Don't divulge all of your life secrets. Having a web site is like having a billboard on the highway for passers by to check out. Don't post anything on Twitter that you would not want to see on that billboard.
