BLOGS

Blogs, short for web log, are websites that function as an online diary or journal. They are usually viewable by anyone with access to the Internet. Today's millennials use blogs like their parents used diaries. The difference is that our diaries and journals were private, usually kept under lock and key- blogs are very public. Blogs can be an incredible way for children to express themselves, to post their poetry and writings, or to share their opinions with others, especially for the child who has trouble expressing himself/herself out loud.

Learning to use blogs responsibly will be an important skill that you can help your child develop. It is much easier to say or post things on the Internet than it is to say something to someone face-to-face. Many young people feel as though they are "invisible " on the Internet but the truth is actually quite the opposite. College admissions counselors regularly check social networking sites such as FaceBook or My Space for students they are considering for admission. School officials and law enforcement may also search blogs. Please discuss the importance of being careful what you post on the Internet and how your child responds to posts in a blog with your child.
