In October 2006, the Virginia P-16 Education Council reported to Governor Timothy Kaine and the Virginia General Assembly the results of its research and deliberations. Among the items recommended by the Education Council is the increase in the number of eighth graders successfully completing Algebra I to 45 percent by 2010. The Virginia Department of Education has embraced this goal and included Algebra I completion by 8th grade as an indicator in their identification of exemplary schools through the Awards of Excellence program.
The Henrico County School Board, during their work session in June of 2008, has established this as a goal for the school division: The number of eighth grade students successfully completing Algebra I will increase to 45 percent.
We know that in order to meet this goal we need to ensure that our curriculum, our instructional program, and the resources that support daily student learning are the very best they can be. With that thought in mind, we are beginning the process of a review of the mathematics program in grades K-8.
