Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol

The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model was developed to provide teachers with a well-articulated, practical model of sheltered instruction. The intent is to facilitate high quality instruction for limited English Proficiency students in content area teaching. However, SIOP strategies have been found to be successful with exceptional education students as well. The structure has broad implications for meeting all diverse learner needs in Henrico.

The SIOP Model is not another "add on" program but rather it is a framework that can bring together a school's instructional program by organizing methods and techniques, and ensuring that effective practices are implemented -- and can be quantified. A number of HCPS schools have adopted components of the SIOP models. For more information on SIOP training opportunities, please contact Ana Watson
